5 Hot Tips to Keep Your Cat Cool This Summer
As the summer sun shines, it's time to make sure your kitty stays cool and comfy. Cats can easily overheat, but with a few smart tips, you can keep them safe and happy. From staying hydrated to beating heatstroke, here are five fun and easy ways to help your feline friend chill out this summer!
1. Quench Their Thirst
Did you know wild cats get most of their hydration needs from their prey? The same goes for your cat–if they eat wet food, they’re getting 80% of their hydration from it. Those that prefer dry food will require more supplemental hydration, but every cat should have water available at all times. If your kitty is finicky, consider getting a cat water fountain; the constant flow mimics their ancestors’ wild water sources. Still not drinking enough? Try adding a bit of homemade chicken broth (hold the garlic, onion, and salt) to make it irresistible!
2. Kitty Ice Pops? Yes, Please!
Yup, you read that right, you can make your cat an ice-cold summer treat to help them stay hydrated and keep their body temperature regulated. Just blend some wet cat food (like our delectable Tiki Cat Broths) with water or low-sodium, cat-friendly chicken broth, pour it into ice cube trays, and freeze. These tasty treats will keep your cat entertained and refreshed on hot summer days. It’s a delicious way to beat the heat!

3. To the Salon!
Cats spend up to half their day grooming, but they still need your help! Regular brushing benefits every feline, especially those glamorous long-haired beauties. Tangled, matted fur can trap body heat, stopping the airflow that keeps them cool. Check out our cat-approved brushes, that ship FREE when added to your litter box order! Does your cat loathe being brushed? No worries! Groomers aren't just for dogs—they can help manage that extra fur and keep your kitty healthy and happy.

4. Keep It Shady
If you’ve got a feline who fancies sunbathing in the backyard with their favorite human, make sure you set up a shady, cool-down station where they can retreat when it gets too hot. Set up an umbrella to provide plenty of shade, and add a comfy cooling mat for ultimate relaxation. Don’t forget a cold water bowl and a few catnip toys for extra fun. If you’re feeling crafty, you could even try your hand at making a DIY cat tent!
5. Handling Heatstroke
On hot days, heat exhaustion can quickly turn into heatstroke. Signs of heatstroke in cats include body temperature of 104°F or above, heavy panting, drooling, rapid breathing, lethargy, bright red gums or mouth, vomiting, and stumbling. If your kitty is displaying these symptoms, it’s time to act fast! Move them to a cool spot, offer fresh water, and apply a cool, wet towel. Avoid using ice-cold water, as it can shock their system. Place a fan nearby to help them cool down gradually. Remember, if they don’t improve quickly, seek out veterinary care right away.
