Did you know wild cats typically don’t drink water? The food they eat contains all the hydration they need. Our pampered house lions aren’t quite as self-sufficient—so we’ve rounded up some clever ways to keep them sipping. Here's what we think works best.
1. Offer a Water Fountain
Cats are naturally drawn to moving water. A pet water fountain encourages them to drink more frequently because the sound and motion simulate a stream or river—much more enticing than still water in a bowl. Many fountains also filter the water, keeping it fresher.
2. Incorporate Wet Food Into Their Diet
Wet cat food and treats contain about 70–80% moisture, compared to only 10–15% in dry kibble. Adding even a portion of wet food to your cat’s daily diet significantly increases their overall water intake.
3. Choose Freezable Treats
Turn up the chill factor! Pop wet treats and food toppers—like Tiki Stix or Fussie Cat Purees—into the freezer for a refreshing frozen snack. It's a fun way to keep your cat cool, hydrated, and totally spoiled all summer long.
4. Add Water or Broth to Their Food
Mixing a few tablespoons of water—or low-sodium, unseasoned chicken or bone broth—into your cat’s wet or dry food can sneak extra hydration into their meals. Just be sure the broth is free of onion, garlic, or added salt.
Keeping your cat hydrated doesn’t have to be a struggle—just a little creativity can go a long way. From fun frozen treats to enticing water fountains, these simple tips can make a big difference in your feline’s health and happiness. Try a few and see what gets your kitty purring—and sipping!
