Keep Your Butterball Safe

Our cats are family, so naturally we want them to join in on the holiday fun! But not so fast… before you let your Fluffy indulge in Thanksgiving goodies, it’s good to know which foods get the green light, and which could stir up trouble.

Meats

Great news, your kitty can totally join the Thanksgiving feast! Plain, unseasoned turkey and chicken are a high protein treat they’ll love.

Hold the ham, it’s loaded with salt and preservatives that aren’t cat-friendly. And as tempting as it is to share those seasoned meats, gravy, skin, or bones, they’re all off-limits, too. Bones, in particular, are a big no-no—they’re a choking hazard and could cause serious digestive trouble.

Veggies

Plain, cooked veggies like green beans, corn, broccoli, and peas are good to go. These fiber-packed, low-cal snacks are a great way to share the Thanksgiving love. Just remember—raw veggies can upset your cat’s tummy, so stick to cooked.

Now for the danger zone: garlic, onions, grapes, raisins, and currants are absolute no-gos. They are toxic to cats and can lead to diarrhea and vomiting, to anemia or even life-threatening kidney failure.

Breads

The fancy stuff is for humans only! Stuffing, garlic bread, and other dressed-up carbs are a big no for your feline friend. Trust us, skipping the extras means skipping the mess if your kitty ends up feeling less than festive.

Thinking about sharing a little bread with your kitty? Go ahead, but keep it light! Plain bread or dinner rolls are perfectly safe treats—just make sure they’re free of butter or seasonings.

Potatoes

Potatoes are the ultimate Thanksgiving MVP, but when it comes to your kitty’s plate, simple is best. Boiled or steamed sweet or white potatoes are a great choice.

Mashed potatoes, sweet potato pie or casserole are off the menu for your cat. They might taste great to us, but cats can't handle lactose, and all that sugar can lead to obesity, diabetes, and other health issues.

Pumpkin

Pumpkin is a Thanksgiving superstar, and guess what? Your kitty can enjoy this festive treat, too. Serve it up plain or fully cooked, and they'll have their own little taste of the holiday feast.

Hold the pie! Pumpkin desserts like pie filling are a no-go for your cat. All that sugar and extra ingredients aren't kitty-friendly, and could cause some tummy trouble, or worse. Stick to the simple stuff, and they'll be purring with delight!
